Serenna veriformans is a (fictional) species of tree fern (from the first Jurassic Park novel) related to the Scaly Tree Fern. Its fossils date back more than 200 million years to the Triassic, although it is still around in the modern world in the tropical wetlands of Brazil and Colombia. The spores of this plant contain a toxic beta-carboline alkaloid that irritates the skin if the fronds are touched, and can be fatal if ingested. The toxicity of this alkaloid is estimated at around 50 times that of Oleander, so beware!
